The Association
An institution, not an interruption.
NWHCA was chartered so new and independent media would not have to borrow standing from a private club that was never obliged to give it.
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
The National White House Correspondents’ Association was chartered in April 2020 by Chanel Rion, then Chief White House Correspondent for One America News, acting to found an association — not to fold one network’s interests into a new letterhead. The Association is not an instrument of any single outlet.
It exists for correspondents, editors, and newsrooms whose audiences already left the old mass-media corridor, and who still intend to cover the presidency seriously. Admission is reviewed. It is not automatic, and it is not for sale as access.
In 2020, under permission then granted by the White House, the Association established a media position on the North Lawn. That is history. History is not a standing right. Every gate, pass, seat, and pool slot remains exclusively the White House’s to give or to refuse.
What we assert
- The briefing room is not the property of any private association.
- Hard passes are a matter for the White House and the Secret Service. They always were.
- A century of custom is not a century of title.
- New media is not a guest list. It is the press the country now reads.
What we refuse
- To imply that membership opens a door.
- To style any card, letter, or mark like a government credential.
- To promise that a question will be asked.
- To become a second monopoly with softer manners.
The competitive fact
The White House Correspondents’ Association remains what it has always been: a private nonprofit of journalists, useful to its members, silent when silence suited it, loud when its customs were touched. It is entitled to its politics. It is not entitled to be mistaken for the First Amendment itself.
NWHCA’s answer is not a rival dinner and not a rival claim on the furniture. It is a cleaner proposition. If you cover the presidency from outside the old club, there is now an association that assigns you a delegate, submits your questions to the White House, and says your name when a strong question is asked on camera. If it is not asked, you still receive a response.
