These terms govern application to and membership in the National White House Correspondents’ Association (“NWHCA,” “the Association”). By applying, you agree to them. If you cannot, do not apply.
1. What membership is
Membership is affiliation with a private association of new and independent media concerned with coverage of the presidency. It is a professional standing. It is not an office, a license, or a contract for access to any place.
2. What membership is not
Membership does not confer, sell, lease, or guarantee access to the White House, the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, the grounds, any workspace, any pool, any aircraft, or any other federal facility. NWHCA does not issue hard passes and does not process Secret Service clearance. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not speaking for the Association.
3. Questions
Every admitted member is assigned a delegate. Questions submitted to that delegate are submitted to the appropriate person at the White House. When a question is strong and there is an opening, it is asked at a briefing, in front of the cameras, and the member’s name and outlet may be stated. If it is not asked on camera, the member still receives a response. Membership does not place the member in the briefing room to ask it in person.
4. Admission and dues
Admission is discretionary. Individual dues are $500 per year. Organization dues are $2,500 per year, for a newsroom of more than five and not more than 250. Dues are invoiced only after a written admission. An application is not an order and not an invoice. Do not send payment with an application. Dues are fees for association services. They are not charitable contributions and not payment for government access.
5. Conduct
Members will not present NWHCA membership as a credential of the United States Government, the Secret Service, the White House, or the White House Correspondents’ Association. Members will not reproduce Association marks so that they resemble a federal pass. The Association may end a membership for a breach of this section without refund, except where a refund is required by law.
6. End of membership
Membership is at will. Either the member or the Association may end it. The Association need not publish its reasons. Ending a membership ends the right to submit questions and to receive members’ correspondence.
7. No agency
Nothing in these terms makes the Association your agent before the government, or the government’s agent before you. We do not appear for you at the gate.
8. Correspondence
Applications on this site are composed in your browser and sent, if you choose to send them, from your own email to info@nwhca.press. Until that letter is sent, the Association has not received it.
Effective September 23, 2026. The Association may amend these terms; continued membership after notice is acceptance.
